“The Imperfect Hope” is an ambitious documentary feature film transporting the viewer through Debby’s journey of discovery, struggle and hope.  As an amazing Transgender woman, Debby Maya has survived body mutilation by her parents, human trafficking and homelessness to become one of the prominent figures in the fight for Transgender rights in Guatemala.  She is currently a few months away from fulfilling a lifelong dream of obtaining a College degree in Social Work and dedicating herself to helping others.

In Guatemala, in addition to being extremely vulnerable to discrimination, bullying, threats and violence every day, Transgender individuals are denied basic inalienable rights: access to healthcare, freedom, the right be represented and most importantly – a voice.  The Imperfect Hope, explores Gender Dysphoria through Debby’s eyes and the fierce opposition, both perceived and real, exerted by powerful institutions in Guatemala to her and her community.  This documentary aims to educate and sensitize all our communities of the struggles facing our mothers, brothers, sisters, fathers, cousins, neighbors, friends and fellow humans…
